Hand dipped in upstate New York using sustainably-sourced beeswax from local apiaries, these beautiful 100% beeswax taper candles are uplifting, energetic candles made for everyday use. Tapers used in a candlestick are functional sources of light…so you may turn off and tune in.
Using the traditional technique of hand dipping, this slow-made process involves repeatedly dipping cotton wicks into melted wax, gradually building up each candle, layer by layer. It may take as many as 30 dips to reach the desired width.
Beeswax is perfect by nature. It is the slowest and cleanest burning wax on earth. Created by the brilliant honeybee, beeswax naturally boasts a pollen-infused color and a floral-sweet scent. And beeswax candles cleanse the air on a molecular level. Burning beeswax candles emits negative ions, which neutralize positive ions (airborne allergens like dust, dander, pollen, smoke). In nature, negative ions are found at beach fronts and at the top of mountains, where there is little to no air pollution. This medicinal property contributes to why we feel good after lighting a beeswax candle. And the long burning, warm glow radiates the same spectrum of light as the sun. Amazing.
Available in two lengths: small (7’’ x 7/8’’, approx 6hrs per candle) or tall (10’’ x 7/8’’, approx 9hrs per candle). Sold as a pair.
100% sustainably sourced beeswax. Cotton wick.
Hand-dipped tapers burn longer than hand poured ones – there is no comparison. The base of a taper measures between 3/4"-7/8" and fits standard size holders. Please note: thrift candle holders vary in size. If the base of a candle is too large or small, choose to (1) mold it by your fingertips (if you’re in a warm location), (2) gently carve the base, or (3) melt the base by fire and press to secure within a holder.
Consider this: the candle flame is a living entity. Respect the candle. Mind the fire. Burn candles within sight and on an even surface. Never light a candle near or on anything that can catch fire. Never leave a candle unattended. Keep candles away from children and animals.
100% beeswax sometimes “blooms”– this is when a powdery coating appears. This naturally occurs due to temperature changes. Beeswax bloom is safe to burn or can be removed with a soft and dry cloth.
Founded in 2017, Beeswax Candles by Alysia Mazzella began as a personal practice of burning tapers daily and collecting brass candlesticks…and grew to offer hundreds of slow-made candles within the first year. Today, Alysia studies and teaches the ancient relationship of humans and honeybees, while her collection nods to traditional candles for function and spirit.
Alysia makes each beeswax candle by hand. No added scents. No added dyes. Just beeswax and a cotton wick. Handcrafted with integrity and intention in upstate New York using sustainably-sourced beeswax from local apiaries.
And because beeswax is a precious resource (you need about 9lbs of honey to harvest 1lb of beeswax from a hive), Alysia offers the Beeswax Exchange. The Beeswax Exchange allows you to recycle any amount of 100% beeswax in exchange for hand-dipped tapers. Find out more about this incredible program here.
In addition to candle making, Alysia is the co-founder of Backland Gardens.
