Dr. Cowan's Garden

The Intention

With an abundance of bioavailable, usable protein found in the green leaves of many edible plants, this High-Protein blend from Dr. Cowan’s Garden is brimming with the nourishment of nature. The protein of the green leaves is concentrated in the dehydration process, so both the fava leaves and moringa leaves used are steamed before dehydration to unlock their nutrients.

Fava leaves – the top of the fava bean plant – are loaded not only with protein, but also with folate, manganese, copper, and phosphorous; while high-protein moringa leaves are also rich in minerals and vitamins A, B6 and thiamin, calcium, iron, copper, and manganese.

Dr. Cowan's Garden powders allow for the assimilation of an abundance of plant diversity to be easily and deliciously incorporated into our everyday lives. This blend – with a flavor that is stronger than most greens but still subtle enough to disappear into almost anything you add it to – is delicious sprinkled on salads, eggs, rice and quinoa, buttered popcorn, steamed or roasted veggies, fish, or chicken. Add to smoothies, stews, pasta, spaghetti sauce – really, anything you enjoy eating! A favorite way of enjoying this powder is sprinkled onto sliced avocadoes with a bit of salt.

The Dr. Cowan’s Garden Story

Originating as an idea at a family vacation in Cape Cod in July 2015, Dr. Cowan’s Garden is a true family-owned-and-run business. With over 40 years of studying food and nutrition and working with patients, Dr. Tom Cowan is a longtime holistic physician living and practicing in San Francisco who specializes in helping people heal through diet and natural medicines. His book How (and Why) to Eat More Vegetables describes why eating small amounts of a wide variety of vegetables is key to optimal health, and he is a passionate and knowledgeable grower of vegetables. He does, indeed, plant and tend many of the vegetables that are turned into these powders. Dr. Cowan believes that, taking our lead from healthy traditional peoples, we should strive to eat at least 10 to 12 different plants a day to avail ourselves of all the concentrated vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that plants have to offer – and Dr. Cowan’s Garden powders help us achieve this plant diversity with ease and accessibility on a daily basis.

Sourcing vegetables from their own organic garden, as well as directly from organic and biodynamic farmers in New York, Pennsylvania, and California, Dr. Cowan’s Garden powders are as nutrient-dense as they are efficacious. All vegetables are gently and intentionally dehydrated (some steamed beforehand) before being turned into powdered form; and all powders are created in-house in Dr. Cowan’s Garden California studio.
