Chagrin Valley

The Intention

Breastfeeding is a beautiful time for special bonding between mama and baby, but it can also mean sore, chapped, or cracked nipples. This soothing breastfeeding balm may help prevent sensitive, sore nipples by forming a protective moisturizing barrier to prevent excessive dryness and help ease and heal nipples in need. Olive oil and cocoa butter deeply hydrate to keep nipples soft, beeswax helps to form a nourishing barrier, while herbal allies of calendula, plantain, mullein, elderflower, marshmallow root, and saint john’s wort provide a powerhouse of Mother Earth’s healing goodness that expansively nurtures, calms, and loves on mamas.

Ingredients are safe for babies, so no need to wash it off before nursing!

The Ingredients

Organic sunflower oil, organic virgin coconut oil, organic cocoa butter, organic calendula, organic plantain, organic mullein, organic elder flowers, organic marshmallow root, organic saint john's wort, organic beeswax

Organic sunflower oil is infused with organic calendula, plantain, mullein, elderflowers, marshmallow root, and st.john's wort

The Ritual

Many women ask if they need to do something to prepare their nipples for breastfeeding. As you go through pregnancy, natural hormonal changes are already preparing your nipples for feeding. You may notice that the areola becomes darker and the nipple texture changes. Although you need no preparation, some women find it helpful to gently massage a light layer of salve over the nipple and areola a few weeks before their due date.

Once breastfeeding begins: continue to use this salve while breastfeeding. Apply as needed and after each feeding. Be sure the nipples are dry before application. All ingredients are safe for ingestion, so no need to wash off before nursing.

The Chagrin Valley Story

Founded in 2001 by former nurse and science teacher, Ida Friedman, Chagrin Valley began as a soapmaking hobby that soon blossomed into so much more. As Ida’s career experiences in medicine and science evolved, she became increasingly concerned about how many toxic chemicals were present in skincare products and the adverse effects they had on us, our children, and our planet.

Believing – and living – deeply in environmental stewardship, Chagrin Valley works hard as a family-owned and family-operated business to be vigilant about their impact on the environment. Reusing, recycling, and composting every day are a part of their business ethics, and they are always deeply mindful of how their daily activities affect Mother Earth and her inhabitants. They only use organic ingredients in their creations, sourced from very well-researched local farmers and small businesses that share their commitment to environmental responsibility. All products are crafted in small batches in their Chagrin Valley, Ohio studio, and all packaging is recyclable or compostable.

Another beautiful cornerstone of Chagrin Valley is their support of pollinators like bees and butterflies. Knowing that these wonderful beings sustain our ecosystems and produce our natural resources by helping plants reproduce, the Chagrin Valley team has created pollinator-habitats at their homes and soap factory by providing food (nectar plants), shelter, water, and larval plants (plants that the butterfly caterpillars like to eat). Each year they are adding more and more native plants to their gardens.
