Root Medley Powder
A blend of three stalwarts of the wonderful world of root vegetables: organically grown parsnips, rutabaga, and celeriac, Dr. Cowan Garden’s Root Medley Powder is a powerhouse of nourishing goodness that works well in both sweet and savory dishes.
Parsnips, which add a gentle sweetness to the blend, are high in fiber, minerals – in particular, manganese, which is needed for bone health – vitamins, and antioxidants. In folklore, parsnips were used as an aphrodisiac, probably due to their affinity towards supporting hormonal health.
Rutabagas, a member of the cabbage family, are a rich source of sulfur-containing compounds that aid in detoxification processes. They impart a spicy, tangy taste to this blend, which works particularly well in soups and meat dishes.
The final component is celeriac, which adds an earthy, celery-like flavor. Celeriac is the root of the celery plant, which, like most roots, is rich in fiber, minerals, and anti-inflammatory compounds. Celeriac is particularly rich in potassium, which supports the health of blood vessels and, like celery, has traditionally been used to support numerous detoxification processes.

Originating as an idea at a family vacation in Cape Cod in July 2015, Dr. Cowan’s Garden is a true family-owned-and-run business. His book How (and Why) to Eat More Vegetables describes why eating small amounts of a wide variety of vegetables is key to optimal health, and he is a passionate and knowledgeable grower of vegetables. He does, indeed, plant and tend many of the vegetables that are turned into these powders. Dr. Cowan believes that, taking our lead from healthy traditional peoples, we should strive to eat at least 10 to 12 different plants a day to avail ourselves of all the concentrated vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that plants have to offer – and Dr. Cowan’s Garden powders help us achieve this plant diversity with ease and accessibility on a daily basis.
Sourcing vegetables from their own organic garden, as well as directly from organic and biodynamic farmers in New York, Pennsylvania, and California, Dr. Cowan’s Garden powders are as nutrient-dense as they are efficacious. All vegetables are gently and intentionally dehydrated (some steamed beforehand) before being turned into powdered form; and all powders are created in-house in Dr. Cowan’s Garden California studio.
