“I believe love is the most powerful healing tool available.” -Laurel Shaffer, Laurel Skin founder + skin-specific herbalist
Founded by skin-specific herbalist + plant communicator + engine of love Laurel Shaffer and located in a beautiful renovated barn in Petaluma, California, Laurel Skin is the culmination of Laurel’s winding journey filled with education, research, and extensive study that led to her path as a sommelier, and eventually skin-specific herbalist. Those formal training paths, as well as her experience in farm, spa, and mindful wellness, have made it possible for her to live the life of a slow beauty advocate and creator of farm-based and hyper-localized spa rituals and formulas. She walks a balance beam with one side in wonderment and appreciation of phytochemistry and the other a world of intuitive trust and respect for whole plant wisdom and ancient traditions. That balance allows her to create formulas of long-standing efficacy.
The Laurel Skin line is a ritualistic range of flower and herb-based skincare, formulated with impeccably sourced, highly vibrant whole plants picked at their peak for unmatched transparency, purity, and results. Firmly rooted in the principles and practices of slow beauty, Laurel’s first and most critical relationship is with the land. Her exclusive partnerships with local artisan farmers ensure the highest quality and most stringent transparency. Their mutual commitment to only 100% organic, raw, unrefined plant materials guarantees unparalleled freshness and efficacy. Laurel Skin believes beauty should be a loving self-care practice that begins and ends with mindfulness.
Leading the way with unparalleled sourcing, a commitment to farmers, and a mission built on transparency, the Laurel Skin line captures California’s hearty terrain and natural abundance in each and every bottle, and relies on their own manufacturing and production capabilities to ensure the freshest, most efficacious products are produced.
Every single whole plant they work with is certified organic or certified Biodynamic®, and they make no exceptions. Laurel Skin partners with artisan farms within 100 miles of their Lab to source all of the flowers and herbs that can grow in their California climate. They begin working with their partnering farms in the Winter during seeding and continue through to harvesting season when each plant is picked at their peak of vitality. Once the plants are harvested, they make their way to the Laurel Skin Lab where they are turned into plant medicine for the skin. Of course, each plant is processed as little as possible to maintain the freshness, purity, and vitality of each plant. Laurel extracts are made in-house, without the use of chemicals, to preserve the integrity and efficacy of the whole plant. All oils used in Laurel Skin creations are certified organic or Biodynamic®, raw, cold pressed, unrefined, and pressed fresh for Laurel by the farms that grow them or by artisan pressers. Their oils are richly hued and have an unmistakably fresh smell: indicators that they are pure and unrefined. Laurel uses only certified organic and Biodynamic® essential oils; many of which are distilled in incredibly small batches just for the Laurel line. Every hydrosol they use is certified organic or Biodynamic® and made exclusively for Laurel Skin by their artisan partnering farmers along the west coast.
Laurel Skin is committed to your health, well-being and, as a result, your beauty. Their commitment begins with the quality of the soil that nourishes and optimizes the ingredients they select. This is the foundation of slow beauty. The Laurel team then follows each ingredient from seed to harvest. Through the season it takes to grow their plants, to the months their handmade blends sit steeping, to the hours they spend bottling each batch, the Laurel Skin team practices slow beauty with patience and intention. Their greatest reward is knowing you feel this when you use their products.
